Finding Professional Purpose: Design Journey in Higher Ed Technology

A personal reflection on rediscovering design purpose through creating the International GPA calculator for higher education, bridging mindful design with practical admissions tools.

Nine years ago in 2016 when I first visited Springfield (MO), I spent much of my time in Barnes & Noble, discovering and rekindling my passion for art and design. My wife and I, along with our three cats and two dogs, ended up moving to this town in late 2019 and have called it home ever since.

Every year, I visit this bookstore at the beginning, middle, and end of the year as part of my annual ritual to reconnect with and remind myself of the purpose of my professional being—what has been strengthened and what was forgotten.

Today, standing in front of the books in the Art, Fashion & Photography section, I was reminded of what I have always enjoyed being part of—the connection with people through the design of everyday things, services, and tools that are mindfully created to properly address our work challenges.

This brought me clarity about why I feel so much joy working in Higher Ed and my recent collaboration with the Insight Digital Agency team on developing the International GPA calculator. It is a beautifully designed tool—not only because it works and works well, but because it understands our daily work in international admissions, respects the CONTROL we need, and honors the delicate moments and spaces we desire. About the Creator

Allen Long created iGPA from his experience as Director of International Admission, DSO, and ARO at a private liberal arts university. Processing approximately 2,000 international applications per cycle with a small team, he identified the need for a standardized, affordable GPA conversion tool that could serve as both a calculation engine and a training resource for new team members.

Data Sources and Methodology
